The Special One draws first blood

I'm a big fan of Carlo, I also appreciate Milan in a way...not that I'm a fan of them or like them, but I have some sort of respect.
But, with the Special One at Inter, Inter overall, Uncle Massimo, and now Ronaldinho at Milan, I can't help but hope for the best for Inter and another trophyless season for Milan.

The Special One threw the first jab btw. and it was fitting...comparing himself to the Great Sacchi and all...damn! Make 'em Pay Jose!!!

Mourinho takes stab at Ancelotti

A few months ago, when Inter were about to win the Scudetto and Milan were struggling, there were rumours that coach Jose Mourinho, now at Inter, was ready to join the Rossoneri to replace Carlo Ancelotti.

The Milan coach reacted to these voices by referring to Mourinho's lowly past as a footballer: "Mourinho to Milan? He can't even kick a ball..."
..
...
..
During the presentation ahead of the new season at Inter's Appiano Gentile training ground, Mourinho referred to this quote and gave the following response.

"Perhaps he has forgotten that in Milan's history Arrigo Sacchi made them play the best football," he said. "And Sacchi, like me, never played football at a high level. My dentist is great, but he's never had tooth ache..."

How to survive in South......what is it again?

I didn't know that until today but South Central is not South Central anymore but they call it...well, they have no name for it, but call it South L.A.

And it was a totally senseless move, as this suggests.

"How to survive in Los Angeles?" would be a shitty name for a song btw.

My First Pair of Jordan's

Me and Jordan's go a long way. It was never meant to be. Back in 1994 I believe my late grandfather went on a US trip and I asked him to bring me Jordan's or the Nike Air Max CB's. He brought me 1990 Air Force(They were the Rookie shoes of the damn Admiral) and paid around 100 Euros for them. He said the Jordan's were ugly and looked like climbing shoes(well, they were but I wanted the Jordan VIII not the IX anyway, the IX were not out yet in Vienna) but it was still a huge rip off. That was the one chance I had of getting Jordan's and what I learned was that you should never ask a 80 year old man to bring you basketball shoes, because the poor man doesn't know about it.
Then there were the Jordan XI...where the original's looked like ballet shoes with that shiny thing around it, but there was a cooler version of them too, the low ones. My cousin had them in black...awesome shoe!
Anyway...my old basketball shoes, my Converse All Star retros I had for 11 years now went bust yesterday, or at least one pair went.

So I had to buy new basketball shoes today, since I'm getting back in John Starks mode(had a decent game yesterday. We lost, but I'm getting my swagger back and the opposition was simply better. But I'm shooting better lately than ever).
I went to Footlocker looking for Jordan's, since I boycott Adidas shoes, don't really like And1 and Reebok's are hard to find in Vienna and found them.
Rashid claims that he could get them cheaper from Ahmed, but I could get them cheaper somewhere else too and since Rashid lives in Paris...yeah, great!
Eitherway, can't wait to put them on and play...

Arsenal Halftime Stats

Just as a measure to compare, I also checked out Arsenal's stats over the past 20 league games.
Interestingly enough, over the past 20 games Arsenal were one of the best teams in Europe in turning a halftime defeat to a win, namely twice. Liverpool as an example, have no win after being behind at half time. However, Arsenal has only won 1 game after a draw at halftime.
Here are the numbers

W 8 1 0
D 1 2 2
L 2 2 0

Rows are result at halftime, columns final result.

Euro2008 halftime stats

Here's some stats from the Euro2008:

In 11 games, the team leading at halftime later won the game. Only in 1 game the game ended in draw(Poland-Austria) and in 3 cases the team leading at halftime lost(Czechs to Turks,Switzerland to Turks, Greece to Spain)

In 12 wins, the game was a draw at halftime. Interestingly enough, in those wins the winner was always the team that scored first.
4 games were draw at halftime and draw in the end.

So apart of Turks, we could argue that no team really could handle being behind at halftime.

I broke this down in a diagram..basically at the Euro, you had a 35% chance of winning the game if you led by halftime. If you didn't lead at halftime but the game was a draw, if you scored the first goal, you had a 100% guarantee that you were not going to lose and a 85% chance to win. If you were behind however at halftime, it was more likely to win than to draw.

Fascinating, no?

Hero

Chain gleaming
Switching lanes
Two-seating
Hate him or love him
For the same reason
Can't leave it
The games needs him
Plus the people need someone to believe in
So in God's Son we trust
'Cause they know I'm gonna give 'em what they want
They looking for... a hero
I guess that makes me... a hero

The end of the Strassenbahn as we know it

What used to be great about public transport in Vienna, where the tramways, or Strassenbahn, specially my personal 3 favorites 1,2 and D. 1 and 2 used to go around the Ring and be a tourist ride where you could see all major attractions of Vienna. It was pretty much like the Circle Line in London, just overground. D used to be the tramway that brought me from my old home to the city center.
As it looks like, the Ring ride will be over by October 26th and D will be called 3 from then on..which is just rubbish!
The Vienna transport system cuts off 2 things that made it unique for more supposed efficiency(which is BS too since along that extension, you will be much faster by underground either way and that supposed new trip will take a whole life).

It's THE SHIRT

Schitterend

4 Things a winning team needs
1)Unity, sacrifice, compromise
2)A good keeper
3)A player good in set pieces
4)Good transition

Marco had 2 and 3 given to him and made sure the team gets 1 and 4 together.

As said before, Marco is Michael Corleone...take either Cruyff or Sacchi as Don Corleone, but Marco is Michael, no matter how you turn it.

France on the other hand...well, it's never good when 4 players in a team attack and 6 defend. Nasri has to play the next game.

ManU

I used to see a chance to make it against ManU but right now, well...
Eitherway, a little bit of tactical thing for the game. The team needs Deco in midfield by any means necessary. In defense, I guess the line-up is given and despite everything, I'm not too worried about Zambrotta or Abidal against Ronaldo, specially if the Kaiser and the Marshall play too. The Marshall also should try to get a booking the next game, at least before the Kaiser gets one.
The key to me is the midfield. Here, I would do what Milan did last season:
I would play Xavi or Iniesta in center, flanked on both sides by Deco and Toure. That way Xavi, or Iniesta can dictate the game and the tempo much better and Yahya and Deco would try to take care of whoever attacks on that side, or Touré takes Ronaldo in some sort of man2man defense.
In attack, I would right now play with either Messi-Henry-Iniesta, or Messi-Henry-Eto'o. All in all, I would play Henry and somehow hope for a miraculous return to form of him, or I would bring him as a sub. But, Ferdinand is one of those defenders Eto'o doesn't like to play against at all. He is quick and physically strong and that's not Eto'o's game at all. Instead, I would try to play him against Neville or Wes Brown, whoever plays right.
So, this would be my team
------------1-------------------
--11--------4------3--------22--
------24-------6-------20-------
-------19----9------8----------

Subs: Henry for Xavi and if needed Bojan for Deco and Sylvinho for Abidal.

Thoughts on Californism Part III

Here's some type of Best Of to do list:
Best food: Burma Superstar
Like I said before, never had food as tasty as that. And the fact that you have a common table and everyone can eat from the dish of the other person and..just go there, best thing ever.
Best fastfood: In-N-Out
Despite Fatburger, Carl's Jr and whatever else, In-N-Out still rules in terms of freshness and taste.
Best sand: Venice Beach
Well, Venice...washed out, but what can I do? Still the best place to swim, surf and everything else.
Best place to avoid: malls and outlets
Don't waste your time going there, even if you are into shopping.
Best coffee: Peet's Coffee
Whoever told you that there is no good coffee in the US has been lying. Peet's ist just as good of a coffee as you can get outside of Italy. I personally can't think of an Austrian coffee shop or café serving better coffee. It's not all Strabugs.
Good city to visit if you stay off the redneck areas:
San Diego(Don't miss out on Balboa Park)
Best channel(TV): ESPN
I wished all US channels were like ESPN and that ESPN would show some European football too. But really, the people who work for them, apart of Stephen A. Smith, really know their sports, unlike European(German) Sports channels were mainly people talk lots of blabla not worth the money. But watching ESPN is one of the better things you can do, as there's probably no sports channel almost as good as them.
Best channel(radio): NPR
NPR is the one perfect channel. It has great in depth analysis on politics and news, it plays decent music, it's hosted by people with some sense of humour not taking themselves too serious(unlike an Austrian "alternative" channel) and you can basically listen to them all day. Make sure to download the excellent podcasts as well, specially All Things Considered.

Some other things to see include the Amoeba music store, The Getty, Downtown L.A., Fisherman's Wharf(but mainly for the seafood/only if you like seafood) and Berkeley. I haven't done all of that yet though, you got to keep something open for next time.

Thoughts on Californism Part II

Looking back after yesterday, maybe the best thing about California was not seeing so much football. Barca's game last night was just utterly depressing and right now, I guess it's more a matter of Rijkaard wanting to leave than anything else.
I stayed up until 1.30 am to watch the NCAA Elite Eight games. Impressed once more by UCLA. Surprised that North Carolina won with 10 points against Louisville. But it's all good.
A quick look at the cities: I saw too little of LA unfortunately, only Santa Monica, a bit of Wilshire, but not the areas I wanted to visit, which was down to my means of transportation sucking bad. But LA is great, sort of. Just stay off the Tehrangeles path and you are safe. My next stop was San Diego, which is in some ways a wonderful city, because basically more than half of the people speak Spanish and not English, the weather is just incredible, Balboa park is even more incredible and overall, the city and the whole county is just wonderful from both city-built and nature view. The big problem might be that San Diego is a city dominated by Navy, Army and whatever else so you might just find the occasional redneck more easily than anywhere else in California.
But given the weather, who gives a ffffff

Vegas was sort of interesting. I still have a love/hate relationship with Vegas. I really don't know how to feel about it, but at least right now I see the point of having a city like Las Vegas. It's just a place they need to vent off, most of them at least. I would love to know how the flux to Vegas is but I might guess that it's more frequented by people from SoCal and maybe also the more conservative areas. In some ways, the city is just ridiculous, but it has some type of magic which makes sure you might return.
San Fran was to me the ultimate dream of a city as it combined everything good you have in Europe with the good things of California. It had a decent public transport, it's left-leaning(Nancy Pelosi for president!!) and the city and everything...well it's just a dream.

A good article I read today on the current economic crisis in the US, although I still have my doubts whether this is really the big one.

Thoughts on Californism Part I

I'm back home now from my 2 week trip to California. To me, there's the US and there's California, both are two different worlds. California, maybe it's the weather, maybe the weed, I really don't know, but this whole laidbackness and everything is just great and I can also live very well with friendly people, I don't need what I got here to be challenged. I didn't miss on anything really there, well maybe apart of internet but looking back, I didn't miss much there either.
For football, you got enough channels right now thanks to the growing number of latinos. But better than that, I got really hooked on March Madness(Go Bruins! And if it goes wrong, I bought my NC blue backpack already..), food is great, intellectual challenge is there(I still have to find a radio station in Europe as good as NPR, Financial Times, The Nation, NYT are available everywhere, I can't imagine a university I would rather prefer to study at than Berkeley), basically, you got everything there if you just look after it.
Yeah, alright, the people believe everything you tell them, Arnold is their governor..so what? Does it matter?
What bothered me so far most was the Tehran/Irangelesian style of living in the US, which basically consists of shopping at malls, going to Vegas, hanging out with Iranians all the time and after 20 years of living there, still not being able to speak english decently, plus believing blacks and latinos are some sort of lower people. But then again, that has nothing to do with Cali, but it's maybe more about Iranians.
Eitherway, if you ever hit San Francisco, make sure to visit Burma Superstar. I haven't had food as good as this in my whole life or let's say it's definetly top 5. Incredibly good restaurant.

Chorus: repeat 4X

I'm going going, back back, to Cali Cali

Verse Two: Notorious B.I.G.

If I got to choose a coast I got to choose the East
I live out there, so don't go there
But that don't mean a nigga can't rest in the West
See some nice breasts in the West
Smoke some nice sess in the West, y'all niggaz is a mess
Thinkin I'm gon stop, givin L.A. props
All I got is beef with those that violate me
I shall annihilate thee
Case closed, suitcase filled with clothes
Linens and things, I begin things
People start to flash, 818's, 213's
313's, B.I.G.
Frequently floss hoes at Roscoe's
If I wanna squirt her, take her to Fatburger
Spend about a week on Venice Beach
Sippin Crist-o, with some freaks from Frisco

Chorus

Verse Three: Notorious B.I.G.

Cali got gunplay, models on the runway
Scream Biggie Biggie gimme One More Chance
I be whippin on the freeway, the NYC way
On the celly-celly with my homeboy Lance
Pass hash from left to right
Only got five blunts left to light, I'm set tonight
Paid a visit to Versace stores
Bet she suck until I ain't got no more, only in L.A.
Bust on bitches be-lly, rub it in they tummy
Lick it, say it's yummy, then fuck yo' man
Fuck your plan, is it to rock the Tri-State?
Almost gold, 5 G's at show gate
Or do you wanna see about seven digits
Fuck hoes exquisite, Cali, great place to visit

C'e solo una famiglia, c'e solo Inter

Inter should actually be a club to dislike in a sense. Lots of money spent, rightwing fans, team full of names...however, that's only on the surface. On the inside, Inter is different and one of the few clubs to support, despite everything.
Because Inter is led by a fan, who unfortunately in the past acted too much as a fan, but what can you say? He is a fan. Inter has as captain a guy who for 12 years now is running up and down the flank like few other people did. And, Inter has as president a guy for whom Inter is not just his team, but his family.
In days of Russian and American owners, powerpoint-rationalist presidents or Tourette-syndrome obnoxious presidents, Moratti remains a figure to cherish and support. May it be a great centenary uncle Massimo! Forza Inter!
